Daniel Leo

Anxiety is a natural response of our bodies produced by the stress of something that’s going to happen. This can make you feel nervous but it’s not supposed to stop you from taking action, actually, anxiety can help people do things better.

If you feel anxious for starting a new job or a new school, it might make you go the extra mile to give a better performance, finishing your tasks early or encouraging yourself to make new friends quickly.

Anxiety comes and goes, but for some people it’s not that easy. When these feelings start being exasperating and last longer than a couple of months, it’s called Anxiety Disorder.

At this point, anxiety makes a direct impact in your life, it makes you avoid doing things, gives you physical symptoms and it can get worst over time when it’s not treated.

Types of anxiety

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): when a person fears and worries about a bunch of things in his life and for long periods. Feeling anxious most of the time.
  • Social Anxiety: an intense fear and aberration of being humiliated, embarrassed, jugged and criticized for being and interacting with others.
  • Phobias: intense fear and anxiety about specific situations or stuffs.
  • Panic: when the person has panic attacks due to an intense level of anxiety, stress and fear. Being affected for a variety of physical symptoms.

A person could and tend to show a mix of symptoms of different types of anxiety and also they’re likely to have symptoms of depression too. Anxiety can also be part of other conditions as OCD and PTSD.

How’s to feel anxious and what’s the treatment?

  • Though experts aren’t sure what causes anxiety, the most shared opinion is a mix of genes, environmental circumstances and brain chemistry.
  • Difficulty to fall asleep.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Rapid breathing.
  • Difficulty concentrating.

These are the common symptoms of anxiety, but with different types and diverse people experiencing different things in their life, anxiety can become a mix of problems having a different impact on each person.

Depending on the level of the disorder, some people don’t need any medical treatment at all, changing their life habits can be enough. On moderate or severe cases a treatment with medication, a psychologist and a therapist is needed.

Anxiety is complex, it’s hard to understand people with anxiety, but the more you learn from something, the more empathy and mindfulness you’ll develop.

As an introvert, I used to be anxious about social situations, I was even developing “strange” behaviors to avoid people or be in public, but I like to make friends and be able to handle that stress when necessary, so I had to resort to techniques to relieve stress.

I don’t have an anxiety disorder but I can be pretty anxious sometimes, so, if I imagine what I feel and duplicate it one hundred times, I could build a small idea about what people with real disorders are struggling with.

What are the best ways to relieve anxiety?

Anxiety is the most common mental disorder in the world, and in the US more than the half of adults say they feel anxious or stressed daily.

I hope these advices can help you with the struggles that numb your day, you can give them a try until you find what works best for you.

1. Find things that make you laugh

Laugh is a cure, when you laugh you relieve stress and tension in your body, making it a habit or acknowledging the things that can make you laugh easily can improve your mood and reduce the extension of anxious feelings.

This is my favorite way to heal my mood, listening to slow and emotional music relieves your anxiety and relaxes your mind.

3. Spending time with your pet

Interaction with your pet promotes a positive state of mind by releasing oxytocin, keeps you active by having company, and gives you another daily purpose.

4. Say NO when you need to

Stress and anxiety can come from uncontrolled sources sometimes, but other times they come from things that you feel forced or restrain to do. If you don’t want to do something, try disciplining you and your environment, setting boundaries and managing courage to just say NO without giving unnecessary explanations.

7. Exercising

People with the habit of making exercise are less likely to feel anxious compared with those who don’t.

Exercising helps you relieve the anxiety by putting stress and tension on your body and then drain it, releasing endorphins that improve your mood making you feel more confident and useful. I know by first hand that perfect family relationships are not common and sometimes finding good friends isn’t so easy. But it’s important to remember the importance of healthy relationships and build a friendly, social and kind attitude that help us make strong bonds with others.

9. Yoga

Yoga has become a popular way to relieve anxiety and stress. Yoga focuses on the balance of a healthy body and a healthy mind and even though there aren’t clear studies that describe how it helps to relieve anxiety, yoga does relax both mind and body and you can try it by yourself.

10. Cuddling ♥️

Intimate physical contact is a great and powerful way to reduce cortisol (stress hormone) and rise love hormones as oxytocin. Kisses, hugs and sex are a perfect combination for stress and anxiety relief.
